Movie Review: Mamma Mia!
Mamma Mia! is the movie version of the musical by the same name. It features the music of ABBA. The basic storyline is that Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is getting married and wants her father to give her away. The problem is that she doesn’t know who her father is. She has found her mother’s diary and has learned that she has three possible fathers. So she invites all three to her wedding, unbeknownst to her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep). All three potential fathers (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgard) show up and send Donna into a tizzy trying to figure out why they are there.
I absolutely adore this movie. I wasn’t sure that I would like it before I saw it, but in the first few minutes I was hooked. Amanda Seyfried was great. She had such a pure, sweet singing voice and a bubbly personality. Meryl Streep was terrific. She did a great job singing and dancing, and throughout the whole movie she sent out the vibe that she had so much fun filming this movie. Julie Walters and Christine Baranski were hilarious as Meryl Streep’s best friends. Dominic Cooper (Willoughby from Sense and Sensibility) was cute, but didn’t have a huge role in the movie. The only things I didn’t love about the movie were that Pierce Brosnan is not a singer and I kind of cringed everytime he started singing and I didn’t love Colin Firth’s character in this movie (for me he will always just be Mr. Darcy).
The morals of this story don’t fall in line with my morals, but not much in the way of media does these days. But if you can look past that, it is a really fun movie that is sure to put a smile on your face. Before the movie was over, I had texted my husband requesting that he have the soundtrack cd burned for me by the time I got home. I haven’t stopped listening to it the past couple of weeks. It makes cleaning the house so much less of a chore if I am belting out Mamma Mia! tunes while cleaning.
